How to Study A Level Maths (9709): A Complete Guide to Scoring A and A*

If you are sitting CAIE Mathematics (9709) and wondering how to move from a B to an A, this guide is for you. After teaching Maths to students across Karachi, Pakistan, and online for over 15 years, I have learned that the students who score highest are not the ones who do the most questions — they are the ones who practise the right* way.
This is the study system I give every one of my A Level Maths students on Day 1.
Why A Level Maths Rewards Method, Not Memorisation
Unlike subjects you can revise by re-reading notes, Maths is a performance skill. You improve by doing, marking honestly, and fixing the exact step where you went wrong. CAIE 9709 tests three things at once:
• Technique — can you differentiate, integrate, and solve equations quickly and accurately? • Selection — can you choose the right method when the question does not tell you which topic it is? • Presentation — can you show clear, logical working so you earn method marks even when the final answer slips?
Students who only memorise worked examples freeze on unfamiliar wording. Students who understand why a method works can adapt it to anything the examiner throws at them.
Step 1: Map the 9709 Syllabus Before You Revise
Download the official CAIE 9709 syllabus and match every past-paper question to a named topic:
• Pure Mathematics 1 & 3 — quadratics, functions, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, differentiation, integration, and (in P3) complex numbers, vectors, and differential equations. • Mechanics — forces, kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum. • Probability & Statistics — representation of data, permutations and combinations, probability, and distributions.
Knowing exactly which component and topic a question belongs to is half the battle in the exam.
Step 2: Build the Core Skills First
Every hard 9709 question is a stack of easy skills. Before attempting full papers, drill the fundamentals until they are automatic: algebraic manipulation, solving simultaneous equations, the laws of indices and logarithms, and the standard derivatives and integrals. If your algebra is shaky, your calculus will collapse under it.
Step 3: Practise Past Papers Under Timed Conditions
From three months out, sit full past papers to the clock. Mark them yourself against the official mark scheme and, crucially, keep an error log: write down every mistake, label it (careless, method, or concept), and revisit it weekly. Most students lose 10–15 marks per paper to repeated, fixable slips — the error log is how you close that gap.
Step 4: Learn to Show Working That Earns Marks
CAIE awards method marks generously. Always write the formula you are using, substitute clearly, and never skip lines in your head. A question worth 6 marks can still earn 4 or 5 even with a wrong final answer if your method is visible and correct.
The A* student is not the one who never makes mistakes — it is the one whose working still earns marks when they do.
