Pure Mathematics 1 is the foundation of the entire 9709 course. If Paper 1 is solid, everything above it — P3, Mechanics, and Statistics — becomes far easier. Here is how each topic is tested and where students lose marks.
Quadratics and Functions
You must complete the square, use the discriminant to reason about roots, and work confidently with composite and inverse functions. The classic trap: forgetting that an inverse function only exists when the function is one-to-one, and mislabelling domain and range. Always sketch first.
Coordinate Geometry and Circles
Straight lines, midpoints, gradients, and the equation of a circle appear every year. The common error is sign mistakes when expanding the circle equation. Write the centre and radius explicitly before substituting.
Trigonometry
Know the exact values, the graphs, and the identities cold. Most lost marks come from dropping solutions inside the required interval — when you solve a trig equation, always find every angle in the given range, not just the first.
Differentiation
Differentiation is tested both mechanically (find dy/dx) and in context (increasing and decreasing functions, stationary points, tangents and normals). The trap is stopping at the first derivative when the question needs the second derivative to classify a maximum or minimum.
Integration
Integration is differentiation in reverse, plus area under a curve. Two things cost marks: forgetting the constant of integration in indefinite integrals, and setting up definite-integral limits in the wrong order for an area between a curve and a line.
The One Habit That Raises Paper 1 Scores
Sketch the situation before you compute. A quick graph tells you how many solutions to expect, whether an area sits above or below the axis, and whether your answer is even plausible. It is the single fastest way to catch your own mistakes.
In Pure 1, a good sketch is worth three careful lines of algebra.
